| County Sheriff Supports Use of Fines |

AMHERST -- Fines for traffic offenses and other citations average as much as $80,000 to $100,000 per quarter and will cover $200,000 that the Board of Supervisors needs to continue work to convert the former train depot into a visitors center with office space and meeting rooms, the sheriff said last week. The fines, collected under a 2001 county ordinance, always have been a steady source of revenue, said Amherst County Sheriff L.J. “Jimmy” Ayers III. The ordinance was approved so that local fine money would remain in the community. Traffic enforcement will not increase under the proposal. “None,” Ayers said. Enforcement will continue in problem areas, including the U.S. 29 Bypass, where some motorists have been cited for driving speeds near 100 mph. Read More. |
