A rap sheet riddled with burglary and theft charges gave Robert Cave plenty of jail stays and 10 stints in drug rehabs, but never a solution for the root of his criminal record. "My troubles were all related to the drugs," said Cave, 40. "If I would have kept going like I did, I would have been dead. I had been fighting so long." The fight came to an end last summer when he was charged with theft by taking. Cave faced eight years in prison for violating his probation. He spent a couple of months in jail, but his probation officer later placed him at the Augusta Day Reporting Center, an intensive substance abuse treatment center that provides an alternative to jail or prison for felons.
