No Warrant Needed To Search Parolees in SC

COLUMBIA -- Police officers in South Carolina no longer need a warrant to search people on probation and parole, following a second, successful attempt Wednesday in the House to override Republican Gov. Mark Sanford's veto.

A single-vote margin made the measure law, which takes effect immediately.

The House's 74-37 vote barely reached the needed two-third majority to override. Last week, the chamber fell 16 votes shy. The Senate voted 36-7 earlier this month to override.

The law was lauded by about 50 officers in uniform from across the state who came to the Statehouse to lobby House members.

"We can go back and make our communities safer," said Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen.
