BENNINGTON – A School Street man was ordered held without bail on Wednesday after police said he stabbed a neighbor in the eye with a broken broom handle on Saturday afternoon in Bennington.

Timothy J. Dufresne, 29, of Bennington, who apppeared in court with a tattoo on the back of his head of a skull with a swastika in its mouth, was arraigned in Bennington District Court on Wednesday on a felony charge of aggravated assault.

The state charged Dufresne as a habitual offender, a sentencing enhancement that would allow a judge to sentence Dufresne to up to life in prison if he's convicted. Dufresne was convicted of burglary in 2006, escaping from custody while on furlough in 2005 and escaping the custody of a facility in 2002.

In an affidavit, Bennington Police Cpl. Christopher Lauzon said police were dispatched to School Street around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Lauzon told another officer already at the School Street home that he believed Dufresne had hit his neighbor in the head with a broken broom handle and stabbed him in the eye. Dufresne had left the area, but police recovered the broken broom handle.

An 8-year-old relative of the neighbor told police she saw Dufresne break the broom handle over his leg then use it to hit the neighbor over the head and stab him in the eye.

Lauzon said Dufresne's girlfriend told police she had tried to break up a fight between Dufresne and the neighbor. She said the neighbor was "throwing punches," but said she returned to her home before the broom handle was used.
