| State Jail Facing Per Diem Budget Cuts |

A decision by the Missouri Senate to reduce per diem to counties housing state prisoners could cost Polk County about $10,000 in revenue a year, Sheriff Steve Bruce said. Per diem for board bill would be reduced from $22 to $19.58, Bruce said. In the 18 years he has been with the sheriff’s office, $22 is the largest amount he’s seen. “The statute says they can pay up to $36,” Bruce said. “It’s worded that it can be, not that it will be. It’s never come close to that.” The estimated loss of $10,000 in revenue from the state for its prisoners is based on the number of state prisoners at the Polk County Jail in 2009 and the amount paid for each prisoner’s per diem, Bruce said. Though a prisoner might be boarded at the jail late in the year, the county might not see a payment until the next year, he said. “I hate to be too negative, but they kind of pay it at their leisure,” Bruce said. “I have never seen any type of pattern.” Read More. |
