SCI Laurel Highlands will be part of a $1 billion effort to increase Pennsylvania’s inmate capacity by nearly 10,000 people. Expansion of the Somerset County prison is already under way, said Betsy Nightingale, the jail’s assistant superintendent. Work on the $2.5 million modular addition began about two weeks ago and is expected to conclude by the end of August. The expansion will increase SCI Laurel Highland’s capacity by 150 inmates. It currently houses 1,381 prisoners. “It was decided at (the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections) central office in Camp Hill due to the overall prison population across the state,” Nightingale said. “We’ve sent some inmates out of state because of the housing issue.” Read More. |
