VT Ruling Helps Transfered Inmates

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the state's inmates serving time in a Kentucky prison who want to use debit cards for telephone calls and get free postage stamps just like inmates in Vermont prisons.

The court reversed a lower Vermont court ruling that denied the state's inmates at the Lee Adjustment Center, in Beattyville, Ky., access to debit cards and up to seven free stamps weekly because inmates from other states in that facility don't have those benefits. The case now goes back to the trial court.

"It's a good precedent if we're going to be sending Vermont offenders out of state they should be logically and common-sensically treated the same as inmates who are serving time in state," said Vermont Defender General Matthew Valerio.
