DENVER — The House passed a bill Monday that would close one state prison. By a vote of 57-6, HB1421 advanced. Southern Colorado lawmakers were divided. Reps. Buffie McFadyen, D-Pueblo West, Tom Massey, R-Poncha Springs, and Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, voted in favor of the bill. Reps. Wes McKinley, D-Walsh, Sal Pace, D-Pueblo, and Ed Vigil, D-Fort Garland, opposed it. The bill would require the Colorado Department of Corrections to select one prison of 500 or more inmates to close by Nov. 1, although amendments to the bill have made provisions to extend the deadline if necessary.
