HOPEWELL TWP. — Pennsylvania will soon be transferring 30 state prison inmates to the Beaver County Jail, a move that could generate nearly $1,300 a day in profit for the county. Warden William Schouppe said Monday that the state Department of Corrections has notified county officials that state prisoners will be shipped to the jail after a classification process during which inmates must meet certain criteria, such as being nonviolent. Beaver County will charge the state $60 per day for each inmate for a total of $1,800 per day for the 30 inmates expected to arrive. It costs about $17 per day to care for one inmate, so the county could reap a profit of $43 a day per inmate, or $1,290 per day with 30 state prisoners housed at the jail. Read More. |
