Law enforcement in Florida has another tool for catching bad guys: Investigators can now track criminals using a database of tattoos. Ed Ricord, a 33-year employee of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, created the database to track criminals. The database includes about 372,000 tattoos that have been cataloged on criminals who have served time in Florida prisons. If law enforcement receives a description of a criminal with a tattoo somewhere on his or her body, they can enter the description into the database and see if it matches one of the criminals on record. In one recent case, investigators looking for a suspect with two S's tattooed on his neck were able to make a match in seconds using the database. The list of criminals with tattoos is also credited with helping to solve a murder case in the Panhandle. For his efforts, Ricord was awarded last Tuesday with one of the state's Davis Productivity Awards, given to state employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to work smarter and more efficiently. |
