SUNBURY — Conditions at the Northumberland County Prison are improving for inmates and staff, according to a recent state Department of Corrections inspection. After inspecting the North Second Street jail in early February, the state agency issued a single citation for having cluttered cells in need of painting in the male inmate wing. Last year, the state found seven deficiencies and issued three citations, such as failure to maintain written policies regarding numerous issues, including health care, inmate searches and transfers; poor condition of about half of the mattresses issued to inmates; lack of a separate holding cell for female inmates; inadequate housing due to lack of space; lack of proof that the prison commissary services was audited in 2007 and 2008; and the ongoing issue of clutter.
