DOVER — A plan endorsed by lawmakers to turn a Manchester juvenile detention center into a women's prison could have significant financial ramifications on Strafford County. The plan, approved Tuesday night by the House Finance Committee, calls for up to 150 women to be moved to the Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester and the closing of the women's prison in Goffstown, which houses 120 women. If the plan comes to fruition, it would be the end of Strafford County's contract with the state to house the overflow prisoners from the Goffstown facility at the Strafford County House of Corrections. The contract brings in around $613,000 dollars annually to the county, based on a 30-prisoner average, according to County Administrator Ray Bower. Read More. |
