Idea To Use Old Prison Facing Opposition

When the full New Hampshire House of Representatives meets next Tuesday, state Rep. Fran Wendelboe, R-New Hampton, will ask that they remove language in a funding bill which would authorize use of part of the former Lakes Region Facility prison in Laconia as a detention center for youthful offenders.

Wendelboe said Thursday she will offer an amendment to an already amended version of Senate Bill 450 funding Health and Human Services.

The House will begin its consideration of SB450, a bill "relative to costs and expenditures at the department of health and human services, establishing a special fund for certain civil fines collected by the department, and relative to the due date for the Medicaid enhancement tax" on May 11 and Wendelboe expects some interesting discussion, a portion of which might deal with her proposal.
