Seven more former Auburn Correctional Facility (N.Y.) inmates have pleaded innocent to felony charges of riot and assault in the attack that hurt eight officers almost a year ago. The seven are 26-year-old Moshe Canty, 24-year-old Kareem Hicks, 31-year-old Kevin Frost, 24-year-old David Weeks, 32-year-old Terrance Maybanks, 23-year-old Henry Justin and 33-year-old Jamal Bovin. Weeks is now at Upstate Correctional Facility in northern New York, the others at Southport prison in the Southern Tier. Five inmates pleaded innocent two weeks agoin Cayuga County Court. Prison authorities say three groups of inmates converged at an officer post in the main prison exercise yard and officers were attacked last June 14th. Other officers with batons came to their defense and two warning shots were fired before order was restored at the prison in Auburn, 23 miles west of Syracuse. Union officials said the attackers were gang members. State officials declined to comment on whether the disturbance was gang-related. The maximum-security prison, which houses almost 1,800 inmates, was locked down for nine days. The officers' injuries included a broken nose. |
