State Inmates May Transition To Counties

As many as 50 state prison inmates – including some violent repeat offenders – could be returning to Santa Cruz County on Oct. 1 and moving into the crowded jail on Hohokam Avenue.

If voters do not approve the one-cent sales tax hike (Proposition 100) on May 18, the state may send thousands of prison inmates back to their home counties, said Finance Director Jennifer St. John.

It’s a cost-saving measure for the state, but an unprecedented burden for counties, St. John said.

“Most counties can’t afford to take their prisoners back,” she said.

The move would come a few months before Santa Cruz County can move into its spacious new detention center east of the county complex, said Sheriff Antonio Estrada.
