AVENAL, Calif. -- They literally toss them over the prison walls. Inmates hide them inside their own bodies. Sometimes employees smuggle them in. There have been some cases where staff members have been caught. Cell phones are a big business at Avenal State Prison south of Fresno. Officials at Avenal call it a cell phone crisis and estimate one in three inmates owns one. "It is crazy -- $1,000 for a cell phone," inmate Randy Muston said. Read More. |
