Canada prison staff fear escape epidemic

Prison staff across Alberta are at risk after prisoners in two cells at the Edmonton Remand Centre recently found a way to open their cell doors, says a Sun source.

"It raises a great deal of concern for staff at that building, but now prisoners all over Alberta will find out how they opened the cell doors in the Edmonton Remand Centre," said a Remand Centre employee.

"The safety of staff and the safety of inmates is in jeopardy. Staff are just going to have to be twice as diligent in their job and twice as aware of what's going on around them."

On Sunday, the Remand Centre's tactical unit was called in to quell a disturbance in a unit holding 19 inmates. Staff discovered two cells would not close properly because prisoners had tampered with the doors.

Alberta Solicitor General spokesman Peter Tadman confirmed that two cell doors were opened by inmates.

The unit was put into lockdown, and nine prisoners were moved, he said.

"It was determined that two locks had a mechanical problem. They were repaired and the lockdown is over. What happened is an isolated incident, everything is back to normal. Staff members are safe," Tadman said, adding that locks out of the common area are of a completely different design than the ones on cell doors.

The Remand Centre has an average daily occupancy of 666 inmates, and a maximum capacity of 740.
