BARRE – Eighteen months ago Eric Russell, 32, was arrested for his fourth drunken driving offense after his truck slammed into a Volkswagen Golf driven by a father who was taking three kids to McDonald's in South Barre. On Tuesday, a judge — who said the crash altered the lives of the victims and their family members — sentenced Russell to 6-1/2 to 20 years in prison. "At 8:30 on Nov. 23, 2008, you changed their lives forever, and you changed your life forever," said Judge Brian Grearson, as he imposed Russell's sentence at the end of the hearing in Vermont District Court in Barre. The sentencing hearing, which ran well beyond closing time for the courthouse, featured a parade of witnesses who spoke in support of the crash victims and others who supported Russell, a carpenter from Williamstown with close-cropped brown hair and a goatee.
