It was confirmed late Wednesday that the state’s minimum security prison at Spence Field will close May 30 with some 222 inmates to be moved to other facilities around the state. The closing came as a shock to the 65 employees at the facility when state officials showed up at 11:30 and made the announcement, sources close to the facility told The Observer. “None of us saw this coming,” the source said.
