| Adult Prison To House Charter School |

There have been charter schools in old big-box stores, shopping malls and church basements. But Ohio has never had one in a prison. A school for young inmates in adult prisons called WinWin Academy is set to open next school year inside the Pickaway Correctional Institution in Orient. Organizers say it will be the first of its kind in the country because the charter school will operate both inside the prison and outside in the community to continue teaching once its students are released. "The whole point is to set the students up for success," said Lauren T. McGarity, who will be superintendent and CEO of the charter school. She also is founder of WinWin Inc., a nonprofit that teaches conflict resolution and life skills in prisons and schools. Read More. |
