| Kansas Runs Asbestos Tests In Prisons |

The Kansas Department of Corrections hired three private contractors to conduct extensive asbestos testing in buildings throughout the state prison system, officials say. An investigation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concluded in March the corrections department violated the Clean Air Act when renovating an asbestos-tainted building at Topeka Correctional Facility about five years ago. The EPA inquiry was prompted by complaints about improper grinding, disposal and transportation of asbestos debris. The cancer-causing material has been used in floor, wall and insulation products.
