Results of 2010 Plane Pull™ to Benefit Special Olympics North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. --- The 2010 Plane Pull™ presented by Credit Suisse and sponsored by ResCare and American Airlines/American Eagle to benefit Special Olympics North Carolina was a success with 70 teams competing and collectively raising more than $124,000, according to Special Olympics North Carolina President/CEO Keith L. Fishburne.

“Seventy teams from across the state had a great time competing for bragging rights while supporting more than 38,000 registered Special Olympics athletes in North Carolina,” Fishburne said. “Involvement from corporate teams, community groups and law enforcement agencies made the event in its11th year one of the best ever!”

The 2010 Plane Pull™ featured a contest among five-person teams to determine who could pull a 30,000 pound American Eagle jet a distance of 25 feet the fastest. Competition took place in three divisions (corporate/community, law enforcement and female), and an overall champion was crowned after a pull-off between the corporate/community and law enforcement division winners. The Prison Emergency Response Team (PERT) Western Division was crowned the overall 2010 Plane Pull Champion by beating the Preation/iContact team with a pull time of 7.84 seconds.

The event’s top individual fundraiser was Jeff Abbood of Credit Suisse, who raised $2,747 for Special Olympics. The top fundraiser in the team category was Credit Suisse’s “In the Money”, with team members Justin Crawford, Jeff Abbood, William Holland, Shane Sweeting, and Preston Campbell raising $8,257. Credit Suisse contributed nearly $60,500 through a corporate grant ($27,500) combined with employee team fundraising ($32,900).

ResCare, which includes CNC Access and Community Alternatives North Carolina, was represented by 9 teams in the competition. Company sponsorship included a corporate grant ($10,000) combined with $8,000 raised by employees. RDU Airport had three teams that participated and raised over $11,000. American Airlines/American Eagle, UPS and RDU International Airport contributed the plane, tarmac and airport resources at no cost.

Other 2010 Plane Pull sponsors included Sheetz,, Food Lion, Progress Energy, Circle K, Hooters, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated and Mac’s Tavern.

The most creative T-shirt design prize was awarded to Hyde Correctional Institution’s Country Boys team.
