Back in February, a lump began to form below Lee's right ear. Since he had surgery last summer for skin cancer on his face, the swelling initially treated as an infection is now on the top of his list of medical issues.Lee is an old man. Thin as a rail and about five and a half feet tall, I doubt he's 150 pounds soaking wet. At 70, his medical problems consume his thoughts. With each chronic condition that exacerbates the others, the margin between life and death narrows. Taking a regimen of medications, everything is a big deal at this point in his life. Lee's situation would make a seamless transition into the national health-care debate, but he's a state prisoner. His situation illuminates why prison health care is going to remain a major expenditure for Californians. Elderly prisoners serving life and lengthy terms are overlapping demographics that cost the state unfathomable sums of money. Lee is a murderer and I'm his cellmate, a "three striker."
