| Gov. Canidate Opposes Prison Reopening |

John Stephen, one of three Republicans running for governor, was in the city on Tuesday to add his voice to the chorus of opposition — which already includes John Lynch, the Democratic incumbent — to re-using the former Lakes Region Facility prison to house either female inmates or youthful offenders. Meeting at City Hall with Ward 1 Councilor Greg Knytych and Ward 4 Councilor Brenda Baer, Stephen said he supported a plan put forward by Nick Toumpas, the commissioner of the state Department of Health and Human Services, that would reallocate limited departmental resources. Toumpas' plan, which was developed in conjunction with Lynch, would not, however, see the LRF re-opened to house youthful offenders from the John H. Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester. House Finance Committee Chair Marjorie Smith, D-Durham, recommended that move, which would also see the closing of the Department of Corrections' women's prison in Goffstown and the relocation of its inmates to the YDC.
