The county's loss of a state contract to house prisoners may have a greater effect than is at first apparent. This was a signal to the county, and although the County Board has acted, there is yet more to be done. When the Department of Corrections decided to end a contract with the county to house prisoners in the county jail, it said it was doing so because of concerns about the number of medical staff in the jail. This was not an instantaneous decision, said the DOC; it was a decision reached because of an accumulation of incidents and evidence. What the County Board did in response was to authorize $153,750 for a request from Sheriff Robert Carlson. That money will hire a full-time nurse-practitioner and increase the time a physician is available.
