KALAMAZOO — A local grassroots group is pushing for Kalamazoo County government to stop asking job applicants about their criminal background. After ex-offenders serve their time behind bars, they deserve the opportunity to find work, said several members from the Michigan Organizing Project during the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners’ meeting on Tuesday. But too often, employers throw away people’s job applications because of their past convictions, said John Musick, MOP’s executive director, who successfully lobbied the city of Kalamazoo to remove criminal background questions off its job applications. Removing criminal background questions gives ex-offenders a chance to interview and get their foot in the door without being automatically discredited, Musick said. Read More. |
