A Gurnee man is going to prison for beating a 6-year-old girl with a belt, even though a judge said he believed the defendant was less culpable than his co-defendant. Lake County Circuit Judge John Philips sentenced Lee Terry-Hemphill, 21, to 57 months in prison on Thursday for beating a girl because she missed the school bus. He also blew marijuana smoke in the girl's face, according to video footage taken from his cell phone. "I will be asking for a significant sentence in the Department of Corrections to deter him from ever raising a belt to a child and to show the community that this (discipline) is so far over the line," said Assistant State's Attorney James Newman.
