| SC Jail Sued By Inmates |

Inmates from the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center in South Carolina have filed lawsuits pertaining to their living conditions. Eleven inmates included among their complaints: no emergency call system in their cells, broken toilets and showers, not receiving prescription medication in a timely manner, asbestos tiles on the floor, mold on the walls, cold cells, not getting obligatory outdoor recreation time, cold food that does not meet nutritional standards, being locked down for extended periods of time, and not getting work release, among other things. Additionally, the jail had been cited for some of these complaints during a Department of Corrections inspection last July, as well as housing pre-trial and sentenced inmates together. Most of the inmates involved in the lawsuit are being held for non-payment of child support; child support offenders make up 50% or more of the detention center population. Read More. |
