An all-out manhunt is under way in Anson County (N.C.) after an inmate escaped from the Brown Creek Correctional Institution, located off Highway 74 near Polkton, Tuesday afternoon. It was the first time anyone has ever escaped from the facility. Officials there have been working closely with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Anson Sheriff's Department to search for 32-year-old Jeffrey Manchester. Patrol cars have been combing the area surrounding the prison, on the lookout for the 5-foot-10, 175 pound escapee. Officials say Manchester has brown eyes and brown hair and could still be wearing his light brown prison jumpsuit. At first, residents were unaware of the getaway, thinking the patrols were part of daily routine. "A deputy sheriff's car was parked out here, and he was sitting beside the road like he was observing something," said restaurant owner Calvin Phillips. "I didn't think a whole lot about it on account of they come by here a lot - it's a heavily-driven road." It's a road that could mean freedom to Manchester. Corrections officials said he has an extensive criminal record in Gaston County, has served time in Lincoln County, and was serving a 45-year sentence for first-degree kidnapping in Anson County. Corrections officials said they think Manchester may have escaped while working at a metal fabricating plant on prison property. They believe he attached himself to a delivery truck, and was able to slip through the confines of the prison. "He should be considered dangerous," said Corrections Administrator Rick Jackson. "The folks in the community should lock their doors, make sure they have their keys for their car, and report anything to the Sheriff's Department or to us if they see anything unusual in the community." |
