On May 21 and 22, 2010, the Wyoming Honor Farm hosted a wild horse adoption, one of two that is held at that facility each year. A total of 22 animals were adopted through the competitive bid process; 20 horses and 2 burros. The Bureau of Land Management contracts with the Wyoming Honor Farm so that inmates gentle wild horses throughout the year. After a period of time the horses are offered for adoption to the public through a competitive bid process. These horses and burros are highly sought after because of the work that inmates do with them. The program is also a benefit to inmates as it teaches them many life skills that help them to re-enter society after their incarceration. On May 21 the free viewing/demonstration clinic was held, during which participants learned about the gentling process and how to care for the horses. On Saturday, May 22, the actual adoption event took place. The Honor Farm offered a total of 58 horses and 2 burros; all of which were at different levels of the training process from early halter to saddle started. The average adopted price was $182, with $525 as the highest bid on a saddle trained horse. The remaining un-adopted horses will continue to be trained where they will be offered again for adoption at the next Honor Farm adoption on August 27 and 28 with a few being added to the BLM national Internet adoption events. The next wild horse adoption at the Wyoming Honor Farm will be held on August 27 and 28, 2010.
