Inmate's Collapse Leads To Officers' Leave

Two correctional officers have been placed on paid administrative leave until state prison officials can sort out conflicting statements about an inmate's medical emergency this week.

On Monday, a 20-year-old male inmate from Alachua County, who was on his first day at Lancaster Correctional Institution, was exercising as part of a program at the youthful offender prison when he told prison staff that he was unable to continue and then collapsed, according to initial reports.

According to a preliminary investigation, three medical workers at the prison applied ice to cool the inmate, put him on a stretcher and remained with him until a Gilchrist County ambulance arrived.
