A Milwaukee man cleared of a 2004 homicide conviction but kept in custody for contesting parole on a prior drug conviction was released Thursday from the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility, a state Department of Corrections official said. DOC spokeswoman Linda Eggert refused to say whether William D. Avery signed the documents that state he still must serve nearly three years on parole for a 1998 drug conviction. Avery's attorney, James Rebholz, said he did not know whether Avery signed the documents but contends the state failed when it did not revoke Avery's parole when he was convicted of the strangling of 39-year-old Maryetta Griffin. Avery, 38, who was convicted of first-degree reckless homicide, was cleared of the killing after DNA evidence matched the profile of accused serial killer Walter E. Ellis, who killed at least seven women in Milwaukee over a 21-year period. Read More. |
