Milwaukee--William Avery spent 12 years behind bars in part, for a murder that he did not commit. DNA evidence proves Avery could not have killed Maryetta Griffin. Instead, accused serial killer, Walter Ellis has been linked to the crime. Avery spoke to TODAYS TMJ4 about his release and wrongful conviction. "I always had faith that i would be free from this because I know I didn't do it," he told TODAYS TMJ4 Avery says when he became aware of the accusations against Walter Ellis, he believed he'd eventually be linked to Griffin's death and Avery would be exonerated. Avery was serving 10 years for a drug conviction at the time he was charged with murder. There is now a dispute over whether Avery is still on probation for that offense. He and his lawyer argue he has served his time and should be free without restrictions. Despite prior trouble with the law, Avery insists he is leaving prison a changed man.
