| Teen Offenders Gain Second Chances |

Until just a few weeks ago, juveniles who did not commit murder could find themselves in prison for the rest of their lives with no chance of parole. But in May the U.S. Supreme Court changed all that with a 5-to-4 ruling saying it is a violation of the prisoners’ Eighth Amendment right — it is cruel and unusual punishment — to provide no second chance for young offenders. This was the right decision for the court and means our society will give teenagers, or those who were convicted as teenagers, the opportunity to be productive members of our society. No one, including the Supreme Court, is saying that adults or teenagers should not pay for their crimes, but many advocates have rightfully complained for years that condemning juveniles not convicted of murder to life in prison is wrong.
