| Searching For Alternatives To More Jails |

Anyone who thought that construction of Wyoming's new medium-security prison at Torrington would solve all of the state's prison problems was sadly mistaken. The primary purpose of the new facility was to allow the state to bring back inmates it had housed at out-of-state prisons. That has been accomplished. But according to state corrections officials, the new prison is filling rapidly, and it won't be long before lack of space becomes an issue once again. As a result, Wyoming will have some important decisions to make. Should we build more prisons, or are there other alternatives that wouldn't jeopardize public safety? After all, our prison space is filling in part because "Wyoming has a higher rate of incarceration than many other states," according to the Legislature's management council. Read More. |
