| New Laboratory Contract to Increase Efficiency in the Department of Corrections Medical/Forensics Division |

(Concord, NH) The New Hampshire Department of Corrections announces that a new laboratory has been contracted to provide on-site testing and screening for all inmate medical and forensics examinations and diagnoses. In May, the Governor and Executive Council awarded the two-year contract to Spectra Laboratories, Inc., of Milpitas, California. Services began on June 1, 2010. Division of Medical and Forensics Services Director Dr. Robert MacLeod said “Clinical laboratory services are a critical and necessary component of the overall DOC healthcare delivery system.” Spectra Laboratories was selected for their lower costs and because of their extensive experience in correctional settings. The company is responsible for offender lab services in the Florida Department of Corrections, the California Division of Juvenile Justice, and for some U.S. Bureau of Prisons operations. The firm uses an automated system and can provide test results within twenty-four hours. This translates into more cost-effective lab services geared toward the special needs of corrections. “We are optimistic that this will help lower our medical and dental costs while providing a high quality of service,” Dr. MacLeod said. The company will provide these services at the New Hampshire State Prison in Concord, the New Hampshire State Prison for Women in Goffstown, the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility in Berlin, and the Secure Psychiatric Unit in Concord. Services provided will include blood, urine, and other body fluid analysis for a wide spectrum of diseases and health conditions. |
