SALEM — Had Russell Learned been a more patient man, he might still be collecting a $200 monthly food allowance from the Department of Transitional Assistance. Instead, his meals for the next four to five years will be coming from another state agency, the Department of Corrections. Learned, 29, who was homeless before his arrest in January, pleaded guilty yesterday to unarmed robbery of a person over 60 and three counts of assault and battery on a public employee. Salem Superior Court Judge Timothy Feeley sentenced Learned to four to five years in state prison, telling Learned his victims, three state employees, "should not ever be subject to any violence, particularly from those they are trying to help."
