BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man serving time for stealing a pickup and breaking out of a county jail unsuccessfully tried to escape from North Dakota’s state prison 43 days before his scheduled release, authorities said Monday. Charles L. Beeney Jr., 42, attempted his escape Friday night, said Tim Tausend, a spokesman for the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Inmates were confined to their cells last weekend while authorities investigated the incident, Tausend said. Tausend and Highway Patrol Capt. Eric Pederson declined to provide details of the escape Monday, saying the investigation was not done. Pederson said Beeney had not yet been charged with any crime related to the escape attempt.
