The Chief Inspector of prisons warned that the blanket treatment done by the staff of the rapidly growing population of Muslim prisoners in England and Wales, as potential or actual extremists is rampant in the prison system, irrespective of the fact that less than 1% are in sent in prison for terrorist-related offences. The Chief Inspector also doubts about the assertions by high security prison staff that non-Muslim prisoners are being forced by the gangs to get converted into Islam through intimidation. The conversions are a consequence of the benefits of protection within a group, better food at Ramadan and the discipline as well as structure provided by observing Islam through prayer. About 164 Muslim prisoners were being interviewed in eight prisons and young offender institutions, and the report is published on the basis of that.
