Due to Canton's reputation as a comparatively safe community, it's easy to overlook statistics showing that 275 prison parolees — convicted of serious crimes against people and property — call the township home. Yet, Canton police officials are keenly aware of the numbers, and they have initiated a program with the Michigan Department of Corrections to jointly make unannounced visits to residences where state parolees live. The goal is simple: Confirm the parolees are obeying the terms of their release, and take into custody those who are in violation, such as a convicted armed robber caught with a gun or former drug dealers who have resumed selling.
