The Michigan Supreme Court has been pretty much a disaster, upholding the shoddiest of criminal convictions and consistently siding with powerful business interests over ordinary citizens. But even a broken clock is right twice a day. On May 26, the court's majority was on time in overturning a lower-court decision that stripped Richard Mason, a construction worker who was locked up on a drunken-driving conviction, of his parental rights. The ruling by two liberal justices (Marilyn Kelly and Michael Cavanagh) and two conservative justices (Robert Young Jr. and Maura Corrigan) does more than uphold the rights of the incarcerated. It's good news for anyone espousing so-called family values -- or, for that matter, anyone who believes the courts and state bureaucracy should consider real-world problems when interpreting the law.
