| Prison Population Down, Keep It Going |

CONCORD – New Hampshire's prison population decreased last year, even before a new and controversial program to reduce prisoner recidivism begins July 1. The annual prison count report done by The Pew Center on the States shows a 6 percent reduction in New Hampshire inmates, but state prison officials say while the prison population is trending down, the reduction is not as large as the research maintains. Jeff Lyons said the department's new database management system came on line during 2008 and the population count the Pew Center used for that year may not be accurate because out-of-state prisoners in New Hampshire facilities may have been double counted here and in their own states.
