MANCHESTER – Hillsborough County was chosen as one of two sites in the country to be studied this summer to develop ways to improve public safety and save money by keeping mentally ill people out of jail for minor crimes. The county’s Department of Corrections will be studied by the Council of State Government’s Justice Center, which will examine jail data on mentally ill inmates and then provide ways to improve the criminal justice system for that population. “I think we can really figure out some good ways the county can increase public safety. They can save money by spending less on this population in jail, and they can really help people who, I think, too often end up on the streets simply due to a lack of access to treatment services,” said Michael Thompson, director of the Justice Center. The study, which is also being conducted in Johnson County, Kan., will hopefully create a model to improve criminal justice for mentally ill people, which can the be adopted by prison systems around the country.
