Hunger strike inmate taken to hospital

Published: 06/21/2004

A Spokane County (Wash.) Jail inmate was taken to a local hospital last Tuesday after losing nearly 80 pounds because he won't eat.
Charles McNabb was checked out at the hospital and returned to jail after hospital officials determined he wasn't unhealthy enough to be force-fed.
Since his arrest, McNabb has become despondent, and refused to eat.
McNabb's attorney has continually argued for his client's right to not eat.
McNabb is suspected of setting a fire at his home that seriously burned his daughter.
He didn't know she was sleeping in the basement at the time.
Sheriff Mark Sterk has said he will not allow an inmate to starve himself to death while in custody.
Prosecutors hope to take McNabb to trial on arson and assault charges July 15th.
