A Gold Hill man serving a life sentence could be out on parole within a year. Richard D. "Boogie" Small, 53, is scheduled for parole consideration in January 2011, according to the state Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission. Small was sentenced as a habitual felon to life in prison in Rowan County in 1990. That conviction and sentence came after an extensive record of convictions starting in 1973 including larceny, driving while impaired, breaking and entering, attempted prison escape, armed robbery, receiving stolen goods, possession of drugs and prison escape.
