Vermont's correction's commissioner was back in Barre to talk about the high number of offenders in the community.

It's part of an ongoing effort in Barre which has the one of the state's highest number of released offenders. The city's mayor says he learned a lot at Monday night's meeting, especially from the offenders themselves. Barre is currently home to about 300 former prisoners and it could be home to more when the state releases nearly 200 non-violent inmates due to budget cuts.

Mayor Thom Lauzon has been trying to prepare his city for that day, while at the same time, fighting the state's plan.

"It's important to me that our community is proactive, that we figure ways to work with the Department of Corrections, as well as the people who are under supervision, and try to make them successful because if we can make them more successful, like I said, it doesn't mean that we're going to be welcoming 200 more in Barre, as mayor I will not allow that to happen, but I'm determined to make life better for the people who are here," said Lauzon.
