State corrections officials have agreed to gather donations of supplies, equipment and money to help improve conditions in Haitian prisons. Louisiana State Penitentiary Warden Burl Cain hopes to make the first shipment of essential medical supplies, wheelchairs and beds to Haitian prisons in July. The request for help came from Elizabeth Gondles, director of the Institutes for Criminal Justice Health Care. Corrections Secretary Richard Stalder says Gondles was impressed by efforts at Angola to equip its hospice program through donations from medical facilities and agencies along with monetary donations that were used to build a hospice chapel and maintain the donated equipment. Gondles' husband, James Gondles, heads the American Correctional Association, which reported recently that conditions in Haiti would be greatly improved by the donation of any supplies, including linens, gowns and bed pads. |
