| Salvadorian army to take over jails' defense |

Salvadorian President Mauricio Funes said Thursday that the armed forces will take over to guard the country's prisons as an emergency measure after at least three jail massacres over the weekend. Salvadorian Defense Minister David Munguia Payes later confirmed Thursday that the army had already begun guarding the prison of Ciudad Barrios in the west of the country. Munguia Payes added that more law enforcement agents had been deployed in the prisons of Zacatecoluca and Izalco. Meanwhile, Director of the National Association of Private Companies, Carlos Araujo Esersky, and the Chamber of Commerce supported the emergency measure, describing it as "a battle that all the public and private institutions must support."
