St. Johnsbury town officials are reconsidering a decision to hire a man with more than two dozen criminal convictions — among them embezzlement, burglary and multiple drunken-driving offenses — to run a youth basketball camp in town next week. Gary D. Colangelo, 56, who has worked with the town Recreation Department in the past, is in the midst of serving a sentence of 29 days to 23 years and is on furlough in St. Johnsbury with the Vermont Department of Corrections. His maximum sentence expires in December 2019. St. Johnsbury Recreation Director Joe Fox said this week he was aware Colangelo had a criminal record before agreeing to hire him for the week-long “Coach C’s No Bull Basketball Camp,” but never requested a formal criminal record check through police.
