The inmates moved to jails in several nearby counties because of a fire two weeks ago in the Vanderburgh County (Ind.) Jail are expected to begin returning this week, authorities said Monday.
The third floor, the maximum-security area of the jail, has been repaired after the June 8 fire, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department said. Inmates who had been held in the jail area on the second floor of the downtown Civic Center were moved upstairs Sunday.
Modifications still must be made to the second-floor cells, where the 140 inmates not moved to other jails had been held. After that work is complete, officials plan to begin retrieving about 250 inmates who had been moved to jails in five other Indiana counties and four Kentucky counties.
Those inmates could begin returning this week, a process that could take several days, officials said.
An inmate has been indicted on arson charges. Investigators say he started the fire in a stack of mattresses and clothes by jamming metal foil into an electrical outlet to produce a spark.
The fire caused about $10,000 in damage and forced an evacuation of the jail. The jail was built for 268 inmates, but 369 were held there at the time of the fire. At least five people were treated for smoke inhalation.
The county's new 512-inmate jail is under construction and scheduled for completion in September 2005.
